What Happens If? (Part 2)
August 15, 2013
What happens if your husband, age 64, was just diagnosed with terminal cancer? You are also age 64 and neither of you have started Social Security at this point. What’s the best strategy now since he only has a few months to live? It’s very important that your husband does not file for Social Security if you are the lower wage earner. If he files before age 66 which is Full Retirement Age, your Survivor Benefit will be permanently reduced. This is just one of the variables to be considered when it comes to selecting the proper Social Security Start-Date.
